A 44-year-old man in another state lost his life in 2019 due to the alleged negligence of multiple doctors during a bone marrow procedure. The incident sparked a medical practice lawsuit filed by the man’s surviving loved ones, but the family was recently able to reach a settlement of $5.5 million. Likewise, any individuals in Illinois who lose loved ones as a result of medical malpractice have the right to seek compensation in civil court.

In the recent case, the alleged medical malpractice incident occurred while the man was going through the process of donating some bone marrow. An anesthesiologist reportedly failed to give him enough oxygen when his level of oxygen plummeted. This allegedly caused the man to suffer serious brain damage and slip into a coma.

The man ended up dying several weeks after the procedure. According to the surviving family members’ lawsuit, not only was the anesthesiologist responsible for the man’s death but also 10 other specialists contributed to it. They thus decided to pursue damages for the man’s death, claiming that he should not have received anesthesia at the time of the procedure.

Doctors have a duty to exercise reasonable care when diagnosing patients and completing medical procedures. If they fail to do this and their patients lose their lives as a result, they may be held accountable for their actions through medical malpractice lawsuits. A solid understanding of what must be proved in a medical malpractice case in Illinois will likely be required to prevail in such a claim.
